SONORA, TX — The Miles Bulldogs went on the road and backed up their state ranking with a 32-14 season-opening win over Sonora on Friday.
Miles, ranked No. 16 in the state in Class 2A Division II after last year's 8-4 season, had a difficult test against a Sonora team that went 11-2 last year in 2A D-I.
The Bulldogs were holding onto an 18-14 lead in the fourth quarter when they showed what they were made of and put the game away with two late touchdowns.
Tevin Meade led Miles’ offense with 19 carries for 145 yards, while Cooper Ellison had four catches for 96 yards against a Sonora secondary led by all-state defensive back Dylan Ford.
New Miles quarterback Liam Yancy performed well in his debut. The sophomore threw for 116 yards on 8-of-15 passing with a touchdown and an interception.
Jaxon Petillo led the Bulldogs’ defensive effort with two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Miles will host Sterling City next week, while Sonora travels to Johnson City.
