Cowboys Trey Lance Ready to Backup Dak Prescott?

LAS VEGAS, NV — The Dallas Cowboys now have two preseason games under their belt, and Trey Lance has raised some eyebrows. The former first-round draft pick played well enough against the Raiders on Saturday night for Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy to notice.

"Two 14-play drives, I mean, that's incredible for preseason football," McCarthy said. "It shows you his understanding and confidence. He just needs to continue to play. He needs reps."

"[Lance] needs to play in live games, particularly in the drop-back phase. He's done a great job at managing everything else," McCarthy concluded.

Lance finished 15/23 for 151 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys 27-12 win. After a middling day against the Rams in the Cowboys' first preseason matchup, it was nice to see Lance come into his own. Last season, he sat in the third-string quarterback slot behind Cooper Rush. With how he continues to play in the preseason, the Cowboys could move him up the roster.

If anything, Lance's positive play has definitely boosted his trade capital. There are several teams across the NFL who might need a replacement quarterback down the line. The Minnesota Vikings in particular just lost there hopeful rookie starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy to a torn meniscus last week.

It's a long NFL season, so Dallas would be just as safe to keep Lance on the roster ready to step up if something happened to Dak Prescott later on this year.
