DALLAS, TX— The Dallas Cowboys have signed and traded for some depth on the defensive line.
Yesterday, August 14, the Dallas Cowboys made a trade with the New York Giants. The Cowboys sent over a 2026 sixth round draft pick for defensive lineman Jordan Phillips and a 2026 seventh round draft pick.
Phillips was a second-round draft pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins and has for the Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, and the Giants in his career. He played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners.
At 341 pounds, Phillips is a nose tackle, or a one technique, so don’t expect him to blow up the stat sheet. Over his career, Phillips has 24 sacks, 181 tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. He does have 24 passes defended over his nine years in the NFL, however.
The Cowboys were thin on the defensive line, relying on second-year Mazi Smith and Osa Odighizuwa with not much behind them. Phillips adds another experienced body and some run stuffing ability..
Not only did the Cowboys trade for Phillips, but they have also signed Carl Lawson to help on the edge of the defense. Lawson was a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He hit the ground running in the NFL with an 8.5 sack season his rookie year for Cincinnati.
Lawson was injured in 2021 after rupturing his Achilles’ tendon then turned in a seven-sack year in 2022. Over his career to this point, Lawson has 27 sacks, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
With Micah Parsons moving around the defense and DeMarcus Lawrence, the Cowboys were leaning heavily on rookie Marshawn Kneeland and Chauncey Gholston so Lawson will add another veteran presence on the field.
The Cowboys will play in their second preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 17, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium
