CHICAGO, IL — San Angelo Central graduate Davis Martin held the New York Yankees to one run on four hits and struck out five — including two against MLB home run leader Aaron Judge — but he was unable to pick up his fourth career victory Wednesday after his team lost the lead.
The Yankees are the second-highest scoring team in MLB.
The only run Martin allowed was a solo home run by All-Star Juan Soto. He left with a 2-1 lead with two outs in the sixth inning.
This was Martin’s third start since returning from a 14-month absence due to Tommy John surgery.
He had a rough first outing, allowing six hits, three walks and four earned runs in a loss to the Minnesota Twins.
He bounced back nicely, however, with a six-inning gem against the Oakland A’s in which he allowed only two hits and one walk, though the White Sox still lost.
Unfortunately, Martin plays for the team with the worst record in MLB. The White Sox were 29-92 heading into Wednesday.
As a senior at San Angelo Central High School in 2015, Martin led the Bobcats to the regional quarterfinals for the first time in program history. He went 9-1 with a 0.29 ERA and 116 strikeouts.
He joins David Hulse and Trey Lunsford as the only former Central players to reach the majors.
Martin played his college ball at Texas Tech University and was drafted in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the White Sox.
