ARLINGTON, TX — Houston Astros pitcher Framber Valdez was one strike away from a no-hitter Tuesday night before it was spoiled by the Texas Rangers.
Valdez had a 3-2 count on Josh Smith with two outs in the ninth inning, but Smith was able to draw a walk.
Corey Seager then crushed the very next pitch to ruin Valdez’s bid for his second career no-hitter.
Valdez left to a standing ovation, and the Astros managed to hang on for a 4-2 win, but the Rangers prevented their Lone Star State rivals from the satisfaction of a no-hitter in Arlington.
It would have been the 18th no-hitter in Astros franchise history and the second this season after Ronel Blanco threw one April 1.
Valdez would have also become just the 36th pitcher in MLB history with multiple no-hitters. Hit other no-hitter was a 2-0 victory over Cleveland on Aug. 1, 2023.
The Astros improved to 58-55, while the Rangers fell to 54-60.
