SAN ANGELO, TX— A defensive end that the Dallas Cowboys were looking to lean on this upcoming season is out with a torn ACL.
Sam Williams, 25, tore his ACL in training camp on Sunday and is out for the season. This one hurts, as the Cowboys do not really have much-proven depth at the position outside of Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.
Williams was a second-round pick out of Ole Miss and has made his presence felt some in limited playing time behind Parsons.
One name to pay attention to is the Cowboys’ most recent second-round pick, Marshawn Kneeland, who is a rookie but received high praise in the NFL Draft.
Still, the Cowboys would be wise to sign a veteran free agent to bridge the gap. With names like Yannick Ngakoue and Carl Lawson out there, getting a rotational piece could be key to slowly bringing Kneeland, along with other backup defensive ends, on the roster.
Other than the injury news out of Oxnard, the Cowboys did submit contract offers to quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Ceedee Lamb, who remains away from camp. Do not expect the Cowboys to go into the season without Lamb out wide.
“Cap Hell” is a myth and the Cowboys can get all three, including Parsons, done when the time comes.
