OXNARD, CA — The Dallas Cowboys opened up their 2024 Training Camp in Oxnard, California, on Thursday. Bad news for Cowboys’ fans as Dallas placed cornerback Trevon Diggs on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
The Cowboys' corner suffered a torn ACL during practice in Week 3 last season and is still in recovery. While he is unavailable at the start of camp, being on the PUP list means that Diggs is allowed to return at any point during training camp or the preseason. However, if he starts the regular season on the list, he must sit out at least four games. It looks like Dallas is being cautious with their 2-time Pro-Bowler.
Diggs, who signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension last August, led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and made his second Pro Bowl in 2022. His 2023 season was cut short after just two games due to the ACL injury. Despite the setback, Diggs has been working with local trainers during the offseason, and his progress indicates a return to form.
Diggs is the only Cowboys player to begin camp on the PUP list. Another notable absence from the start of camp was wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Dallas’ star receiver continues to hold out as he seeks a new contract.
With Diggs sidelined, depth cornerbacks such as rookie Caelen Carson, Nahshon Wright, and Israel Mukuamu will have the opportunity to compete for roster spots behind the established starters Diggs, DaRon Bland, and Jourdan Lewis.
If Diggs returns in time for the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 11, he will have ample opportunities to regain his form before the regular season begins.
