Sul Ross State Moves Closer to NCAA Division II Status

ALPINE, TX — The NCAA recently approved Sul Ross State, the newest member of the Lone Star Conference, to continue the transition process to NCAA Division II. Sul Ross State moves to Year 2 of its three-year provisional membership and will officially begin athletic competition in the LSC in the fall of 2024.

The decision by the NCAA's Division II Membership Committee is effective as of Sept. 1.

Sul Ross State began its LSC membership on July 1 and is expected to complete its move from Division III to Division II in the 2026-27 academic year. The Lobos have 12 athletics teams expected to begin LSC competition this year and are eligible for regular-season league championships and awards. However, even if the Lobos have a Cinderella year in football, they are not eligible for postseason play until achieving full Division II member status.

Sul Ross State University President Carlos Hernandez recently spoke with the Lone Star Conference about the move.

"Sul Ross State University is committed to a successful transition to Division II," said Hernandez. "This is not only about athletics as we believe whole-heartedly that the move to Division II will benefit every aspect of enrollment and retention and play a major role in our many growth initiatives."

The Lobos' first scheduled Lone Star Conference competition comes on Aug. 29 when the Lobos host the West Texas A&M Buffs in Alpine. The Angelo State Rams now add another West Texas school to their potential rivals moving forward. The Rams will play Sul Ross State on Oct. 26 at LeGrand Stadium in San Angelo.
