COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — On Monday, USA Basketball Team Captain and 4x NBA Champion Lebron James was informed that he will be Team USA’s male flagbearer for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games opening ceremonies.
The flagbearers are voted on by fellow Team USA athletes, and James will be the flagbearer in 2024. He will be the first men’s basketball player and the third basketball player in history to have the honor.
James is also the captain of Team USA’s basketball team, which is seeking another gold medal in the coming weeks. Over the past month, Team USA finished 5-0 in exhibition games, playing tune-up games as the Paris Olympics are right around the corner.
Team USA narrowly escaped a feisty South Sudan team, 101-100, in London on Saturday, thanks to some last-minute heroics by James. USA defeated Germany 92-88 in the final exhibition game behind 20 points from Lebron. It took another superhuman performance from James in that contest to finally down the Germans. Lebron scored the last 11 points for Team USA to secure the victory.
USA Basketball will open up group play in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday. They play three group stage games before moving on to the knockout stage. The first will be Serbia on July 28, South Sudan on July 31, and on August 3, the Americans will finish with Puerto Rico. The knockout rounds then shift to Paris with the quarterfinals on August 6, the semifinals on August 8, and the gold medal game on August 10 at Accor Arena.
