Lake View's Lacy signs to play softball at Western Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — Recent Lake View High School graduate Skylar Lacy never gave up on her dream to become a college softball player.

After injuries derailed her junior and senior seasons, she persevered and continued to show what she could do with her San Angelo club team.

It didn't go unnoticed.

Lacy was offered an opportunity recently to play at Western Texas College in Snyder, and she took it. She made the decision official with a signing ceremony Tuesday, July 16, at D-BAT San Angelo's training facility.

"From the first time I saw her, I knew she had the talent to play at the next level," said Lacy's club coach, Marisa Cruz, with the San Angelo Dream Crushers. "It was a privilege and honor to coach her, and she's been a great role model for all my little ones, because a lot of them look up to her."

Lacy's father, Edward, spoke before she signed and said he knew his daughter had a special talent to play softball when she was only 8 years old.

"We were in the backyard throwing the ball around, and she took it and threw one right at me, and it popped the glove," he said. "I ran in excited and said to my wife, 'We got something we can work with here."

Edward said Skylar also had an offer to play at McPherson College in Kansas before Western Texas called.

"Momma wasn't too happy about (McPherson), because that's about nine hours from here," Edward said. "Then lo and behold, the coach from Western Texas called and said, 'Hey, come see us.' So God had a plan for us."

Skylar was also an all-district volleyball player at Lake View. After a promising start to her softball career, which included being named a second-team all-district shortstop as a sophomore, she suffered a series of injuries, including a broken kneecap.

The chance to play softball in college made it all worthwhile.

"It feels good. It's definitely an accomplishment. I didn't want my hard work to go unnoticed," she said. "I just thank my coaches and parents for the opportunities they provided."

Western Texas College competes in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The school's softball team went 22-36 last year.

Lacy said she plans to pursue a career as a social worker after college.

"I'm not sure where. I just want to be able to help kids that need it," she said.
