Miles' Bid for Three-Peat Falls Short at 7-on-7 State Tournament

COLLEGE STATION, TX — The Miles Bulldogs' run at a third straight 7-on-7 state title fell short Friday with a 13-12 loss to Lexington in the quarterfinals of the Division III championship bracket.

Just like last year, Miles was living dangerously with close wins over Brady (22-16) and Alpine (14-13) in the Bulldogs' first two games championship bracket.

Miles also had a 14-6 win over Bartlett earlier Friday morning to complete pool play after a lightning delay postponed some of Thursday's games.

Miles' offense was led by quarterback Liam Yancy, who just completed his freshman year, and an exciting group of receivers, including Cooper Ellison, giving the Bulldogs hope they can build on last season's 8-4 record this fall.

The only other area team to win a game in the championship bracket was Iraan, which was making its first state appearance.

The Braves defeated Grapeland 14-13 to reach the round of 16 before being overwhelmed 34-0 by Ganado.

Sonora won its final game of pool play Friday 29-13 over Eastland, but the Broncos were edged 21-20 by Daingerfield in their opening game of the championship bracket

Brady had the best day Thursday of our area schools with a 2-1 record in pool play, but the Bulldogs ran into defending state champion Miles in their first game Friday, and they held their own in the 22-16 loss.

Gunter went on to claim the title with a 20-14 win over Tidehaven in the final.
