SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 24 Angelo State Rams hosted No. 5 West Texas A&M in the Rams’ final home series on Friday night, April 27. The Rams jumped out to an early lead and held on through the finish to claim victory in Game 1 at Foster Field 11-8.
Angelo State jumped out on WT early in the first inning with three runs as Conagher Sands and Tayten Tredaway hit back-to-back home runs to take a 3-0 lead. The Buffs answered with a run in the top of the 3rd to pull within two.
The Rams had their best inning of the evening in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Tripp Clark hit a solo home run to left before Blake Wilhoite drove in two more on a single to left field. In total, the Rams scored five runs in the 3rd to take an 8-1 lead.
WT showed resilience over the next few innings as they clawed back into the ball game. The Buffs put up one in the 4th and four runs in the 5th to cut ASU’s lead to 8-6. Angelo State managed to keep scoring when the Rams needed to hold off WT’s comeback. Kamden Kelton stepped up with a run in the bottom of the 5th and then two RBIs on a double over the centerfielder’s head in the 6th.
WT would score two more runs, but the Rams held the Buffs scoreless in the final three innings to secure victory,11-8.
With the win, the Rams improve to 33-14 (31-14 LSC) and move one game out of first place in the conference standings. ASU returns to action on Saturday, April 27, with a doubleheader against WT beginning at 4 p.m.
