DETROIT— The 2024 NFL Draft is underway, and the Dallas Cowboys moved around in the first-round last night and ended up picking an offensive tackle.
Last night, the 2024 NFL Draft began with the first round and the board fell incredibly well for the Cowboys.
Starting off the night, the Chicago Bears surprised no one when they selected USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall pick. After Williams, 13 consecutive offensive players went until the Indianapolis Colts selected defensive end Laiatu Latu from UCLA.
Quarterbacks were in high demand as six went in the top 12 picks. Williams to the Bears then LSU’s Jayden Daniels went second overall to the Washington Commanders and the New England Patriots selected North Carolina’s Drake Maye third overall.
At eight, the Atlanta Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington then at 10 the Minnesota Vikings took J.J. McCarthy from Michigan. The Denver Broncos finished the quarterback run with Bo Nix out of Oregon becoming a Bronco.
The board fell incredibly well for the Cowboys as they had about four players on the board that they were interested in at 24. Those players seemed to be Duke center Graham Barton, Arizona offensive lineman Jordan Morgan, Missouri defensive end Darius Robinson, and Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton. The Cowboys traded down to 29 with the Detroit Lions, picking up an extra third round pick, and Morgan, Barton, and Robinson went at 25, 26, and 27 to the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Arizona Cardinals respectively.
At 28, the Buffalo Bills were set to draft and needed a receiver after trading Stefon Diggs and losing Gabe Davis in free agency but traded the pick to the Kansas City Chiefs who ended up selecting Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver out of Texas.
At 29, the Cowboys got their guy in Tyler Guyton.
Guyton is a little on the raw side and according to draft analyst Dane Brugler, was the sixth overall offensive tackle on his board. Guyton grew up outside Austin, Texas and played tight end for a season at TCU before ending up at Oklahoma.
He was a two-year starter and mainly played right tackle but has the athleticism and talent to move to the left side. He might need a little work but has the ability to be an elite offensive tackle. Guyton is also 6'7", 322 lbs., and is young at just under 22-years-old.
He was 27th overall on Brugler’s board and graded out as a 1st or 2nd round pick.
It was a successful night for the Cowboys regardless of what fans may have wanted them to do. Not only did they get the guy they were targeting but also got an extra third round pick, which this year will be important as they do not have a fourth-round pick.
There are also plenty of players still available on the board as well. Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean, Texas A&M linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson, West Virginia center Zach Frazier, North Carolina State linebacker Payton Wilson, Texas running back Jonathan Brooks, and Florida State wide receiver Keon Coleman are still out there.
The 2024 NFL Draft continues tonight with the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
