AUSTIN, TX — The No. 20 Angelo State Rambelles Softball team kicked off their three-game Lone Star Conference series right with a win over the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers on Thursday, March 29. A defensive battle ended with the Belles eventually breaking through in the final innings to claim a 6-0 opening victory.
Cheyenne Floyd picked up her 17th win this season with the start on the mound. Floyd (17-4) struck out three batters and only allowed one hit through six innings of work.
After four scoreless innings, the Belles finally broke the stalemate in the top of the 5th. Ashton Dirner drew a walk, then stole second and third base to put the Belles in scoring position. Averie Gunther then stepped up to the plate and blasted a double to left-center field to score Dirner. The Belles took a 1-0 lead until the 7th inning.
In the 7th, Zoey De Baca began the inning with a walk before Layni Tanner bunted herself on base with an infield single. Pinch runner Erin Plunkett advanced to third later when Dirner laid down a sac bunt. Gunther then drove in her second RBI with a sac fly. Carter Smith then beat out a throw to first for another infield single to place runners on the corners. Tanner would steal home at the next at-bat. The Hilltoppers committed an error to keep the inning alive, and Tatiana Trotter drove in another run with a single. Keilei Garcia finished the Belles onslaught with a double to left center. The Belles claimed victory, 6-0.
No. 20 Angelo State returns to action on Good Friday, March 29, with a double-header against St. Edward’s. The first pitch for Game 2 was at noon, with Game 3 following immediately after.
