WALL, TX — The No. 2 Wall Hawks hosted the Grape Creek Eagles on a chilly Tuesday night out at Wall High School. The Hawks lived up to another excellent performance as the Wall went up big early to claim victory in five innings, 17-1.
After the Hawks’ defense put up a zero in the top of the first inning, Wall’s offense went to work. Wall scored early and often as they built a steady lead. The inning was highlighted by another home run from Caleb Braden, which blew the game open. Wall added two more in the bottom of the second to make the score 16-0 heading to the third.
Grape Creek battled back to get on the scoreboard with two hits in the top of the third inning. Thanks to some overthrows in Wall’s infield, Eagles’ baserunners made it around the bases to score a run. Grape Creek could have scored more in the third if not for an excellent play by Wall’s catcher, Gunnar Dillard. Dillard caught a ball thrown in from the outfield to stop a baserunner coming home in his tracks. Dillard chased the baserunner back towards third base and tagged him for the out.
Wall would add one run in the 4th inning to make the final score after five innings, 17-1. Audgen Hallmark started on the mound and pitched two flawless innings before he was done for the night. He received the win for his two innings of work.
The Hawks and Eagles return to action for Game 2 of the 2-game district series on Friday, March 22, in Grape Creek. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
