ASU Rams Fall to ENMU in the LSC Conference Tournament

FRISCO, TX — The Angelo State Rams opened up the 2024 Lone Star Conference Tournament in their quarterfinal matchup against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds. Despite a hot start, the Greyhounds proved too much for the Rams in the paint as ENMU downed Angelo State 103-84.

1st Half

Angelo State jumped out to an early lead behind solid shooting from Keyshawn Embery-Simpson. The Rams Shooting Guard scored the first five points of the contest before the Greyhounds scored. ASU led by as much as seven points with 11 minutes remaining in the first half before New Mexico came alive. The Greyhounds took advantage of two Rams’ turnovers to knock down some quick shots off the fast break to take the lead 24-22.

The next three minutes turned into a sprint where the lead changed hands several times down the stretch. Angelo State hit a wall around the five-minute mark, where Eastern New Mexico took their biggest lead of the ball game, 37-29. Kendrick Delahoussaye ended the Greyhounds’ run with a three-point shot to bring the Rams back within five points. However, the Greyhounds would not be denied as they continued to dominate in the paint. Shots completely stopped falling for the Rams as they fell behind by as much as 11 points at the half.

ASU headed to the locker room down 48-37.

2nd Half

Eastern New Mexico exited the locker room and picked up exactly where they left off. The Greyhounds continued to have an incredible shooting night behind offensive rebound after offensive rebound. Even when ENMU missed a shot, someone from the Greyhounds was ready for a rebound. Embery-Simpson kept hitting shots to try to keep the Rams in it, but it was not enough. The Greyhounds led by 20 points with ten minutes left to play.

The Rams fought admirably to the end, but Thursday night was just not their night. The Rams lost 103-84.

Angelo State had no answer for ENMU’s dominant play inside. The Greyhounds outrebounded and outscored the Rams in the paint. Compound those factors with the Rams' off-shooting night, and ASU’s chances at claiming victory diminished.

Keyshawn Embery-Simpson led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Kevon Godwin with 19 points. The Rams still have a chance to make it to the NCAA Regional Tournament before the year is officially over, so this loss should motivate ASU as it prepares for the next step. The Selection Show will be on Sunday, March 10.
