DENVER, CO — The Denver Broncos have officially parted ways with former quarterback Russel Wilson. The experiment that cost the Broncos nearly an arm and a leg is over in Denver.
"We spoke with Russell Wilson to inform him of his release after the start of the league year,'' coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton said in a statement. "On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career. As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.''
Wilson’s release ends a disappointing chapter that lasted two seasons in Denver. The Broncos benched the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback at the end of last season after Wilson led Denver to an 11-19 overall record.

There are consequences for the Broncos after releasing Wilson before the end of his contract. He initially signed a five-year, $242.6 million contract. Denver has to eat $85 million in dead money to let the quarterback go on Monday.
