MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Angelo State University Handball Club emerged triumphant from the 71st U.S. Handball Association (USHA) National Collegiate Championships at the University of Minnesota, clinching three national titles and several additional medals.
The ASU women's team secured first place in the Women's A Division, accumulating 2,060 points to clinch the national championship ahead of runner-up Utah State University with 1,392 points. Simultaneously, the ASU men's team clinched fourth place in the Men's A Division. Their combined total of 3,816 points propelled the ASU Handball Club to the overall A Division national championship.
Individual competition witnessed further success for ASU, as the doubles team of Israel Lopez Jr. and Austin Colwell clinched the national title in the Men's B Doubles Division. Colwell also earned the Silver Medal in the Men's B Singles Division, with teammate Cade Whitley securing the Silver Medal in the Men's C4 Singles Division.
On the women's team, Taigan Rivers earned the Silver Medal in the Women's B Singles Division, while Kinzi Jo Leon secured the Silver Medal in the Women's C Singles Division. Twin sisters Kelly and Kimberly Salisbury clinched the Silver Medal in the Women's C Doubles Division.
Dr. Veronica Snow, faculty sponsor of the ASU Handball Club, expressed immense pride in the team's achievements, stating, "The coaches and I are so proud of how well our student-athletes competed and how well they represented Angelo State." She extended gratitude to various sponsors and supporters whose contributions facilitated the success of the ASU Handball Club.
More than 220 student-athletes from 33 universities participated in the national tournament. Representing the ASU Handball Club were players from diverse backgrounds and academic majors:
