Foul Trouble Trips Up Lady Cats in the Area Round

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Central Lady Cats’ historic season came to an unfortunate end on Friday night, February 16. The Lady Cats played Fort Worth Boswell at Clyde High School in Clyde. Despite a strong defensive showing throughout the game, an off-shooting night, coupled with foul trouble, allowed Boswell to build a substantial lead in the 2nd half to beat Central 58-36.

It seemed like an off night all around for Central from start to finish. First, the Lady Cats showed up at Clyde High School with an unwelcome surprise. Both teams brought similar uniforms, and Central ended up wearing white Clyde uniforms provided by the high school.

When the actual game began, Fort Worth Boswell jumped out to an early in the first half due to solid shooting. The Lady Cats woke up in the 2nd quarter to battle back within four points of the lead, 19-15, with about three minutes remaining until halftime. That’s the closest Central would claw toward Boswell before the Lady Pioneers pulled away. The Lady Cats trailed at the half, 26-18.

In the second half, Central played tough defense, but foul trouble put Boswell at the line too many times. The Lady Pioneers took care of business, only missing two free throws in the second half, and extended the lead to 14 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Lady Cats never gave up and battled hard until the very end, but fell 58-36.

San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick analyzed the second half after the game. Check out the video below. (Note: Score correction - In the video, Chadwick says the final score was 56-38. The final score was actually 58-36).

Nevaeh Hearne led the Lady Cats in scoring on Friday night with 11 points. Ana Wierzowiecki followed close behind with eight points.

Despite the loss, the Lady Cats finished the 2023-24 season historically. Not only did Central win a share of the district championship, but the ladies also claimed a Bi-District championship on Tuesday. Head Coach Arsenior Geter continues to build a solid program, and these Lady Cats have a bright future ahead of them.
