Lady Cats Claim First District; Bi-District Championship in Over 20 Years

ANDREWS, TX — The San Angelo Central Lady Cats traveled to Andrews on Tuesday, February 13, for their Bi-District matchup against El Paso Franklin. Despite a slow start, the Lady Cats overcame a 9-point deficit to secure the first Bi-District Championship for Central in over 20 years. The Lady Cats downed El Paso Franklin, 69-51.

After the historic win, San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick interviewed Lady Cats Head Coach Arsenior Geter. Check out the full interview and highlights from the game below:

El Paso Franklin came out hot in the 1st quarter. It seemed like no matter how good the Lady Cats were on defense, Franklin couldn’t miss. The Lady Cougars went 4/4 for 3-point range in the 1st quarter to take a 19-10 lead. Central battled back in the 2nd quarter behind strong baskets from Nevaeh Hearne but still trailed 29-24 at the break.

Whatever speech Coach Geter gave the ladies at halftime worked because Central exploded in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Cats erased the five-point deficit early and scored a monstrous 28 points, more than any single quarter point total this season. Through a combination of hard-nosed defense and solid shooting, Central took the lead and never looked back.

The 4th quarter almost became a formality as the Lady Cats continued to pour it on. Central outscored the Lady Cougars 59-32 in the final three quarters to claim victory 69-51.

Nevaeh Hearne led all scorers on the evening with a dominating 29-point performance. Here are her thoughts on her performance after the Lady Cats' victory.

Central hits the road again on Friday, February 16, when the Lady Cats travel to Clyde to play the Fort Worth Boswell Pioneers in the Area Round. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Clyde High School.
