SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Central Lady Cats accomplished something on Tuesday night that hadn't been done in 21 years. These ladies are 2024 District 2-6A Champions. On a night when Nevaeh Hearne scored the 1000th point in a Bobcats' uniform, the Lady Cats took down Odessa High to secure a share of a district championship 45-26.
The highlight of the contest was when Hearne hit a corner three to put herself into the record books. She's now scored over 1000 points as a member of the Lady Cats. The entire bench erupted when Hearne hit the shot, much to the referees' displeasure. The officials admonished the girls, but that did not damper the memorable night.
Central jumped out to an early lead with tough defense right out of the gate. Even with all the implications in Tuesday night's game, the Lady Cats prevailed. Central pulled away in the second half thanks to lockdown defense from Hearne and Mackenna McMillan. Steals and fast break points allowed Central to put this away early as the Lady Cats won their final game of the regular season 45-26.
After the game, Head Coach Arsenior Geter gave his thoughts on the ladies' performance and finally spoke about what it means to win another district championship. Check out the full interview below:
The Lady Cats looked elated after the game and during the trophy celebration. Each team member took turns cutting a piece of the net off of one of the baskets to commemorate the occasion. The last to go was Coach Geter. The Lady Cats' head coach took the rest of the net down as a reminder of all the Lady Cats accomplished this season.
The Lady Cats are technically tied with Frenship for a share of the title but are district champions. A coin flip will decide who will be the No. 1 seed out of District 2-6A and who will be the No. 2 seed. However it shakes out, the Lady Cats play their first playoff matchup in Andrews next Tuesday, February 13. The game time and opponent are still to be determined.
