Washington Steals New Head Coach from Cowboys

WASHINGTON, DC — The Washington Commanders officially hired a new head coach on Thursday, February 1. It’s bad news for Dallas Cowboys fans as the Commanders hired Dallas Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn as the next head coach.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first announced the news on Thursday morning via his X account.

“From Dallas to D.C., the Commanders are hiring Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their head coach, per league sources,” Adam Schefter said. “Quinn and Commanders’ GM Adam Peters are the two men now charged with leading Washington into the future.”

Quinn arrived in Dallas two seasons ago to turn around one of the NFL’s worst defenses. The DC quickly turned the Cowboys around with one of the best pass rushes and secondaries in the league in the following seasons. He led the Cowboys to two top-12 finishes in total defense (including a fifth-place finish in 2023).

Dan Quinn drew head coaching interest a season ago after the Cowboys’ turnaround but stayed with Dallas, and the Cowboys made another Super Bowl run. That ambition fell flat on its face in the first round of the playoffs this year when the Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers at home.

The Commanders fired previous head coach Ron Rivera after finishing with a 4-13 overall record. Washington hires its second defensive-minded coach in an attempt to fix the glaring holes in a defense that finished last in the league in 2023.

Quinn inherits a team with no clear answer at quarterback. Second-year man Sam Howell struggled at times in 2023. Some of that might be due to the dysfunction in the organization, but his final three games finished on a seriously low note, with eight interceptions to only three touchdowns and less than 200 yards passing a game.

Dallas now needs a new defensive coordinator. The search begins.
