Christoval Lady Cougars Sweep the Ozona Lady Lions in Thrilling Victory

CHRISTOVAL- The Christoval Lady Cougars held off the Ozona Lady Lions on Friday night to complete the sweep and remain undefeated in district play.

Christoval juniors Halle “Full Metal” Hughes and Madyson George led the Red Legion into war against Ozona for a second time where the two led the Lady Cougars in points, 16 and 20 respectively.

After one, the Lady Lions had the lead, 13-8, thanks in large part to Ozona’s Vale Garza’s 11 points. Not an unsurmountable lead by any means, but the Lady Lions, having lost one already to this Lady Cougar's team, came in on fire and surgically focused. Things actually looked kind of grim for the Lady Cougars.

But when things are grim, be the Grim Reaper.

That’s exactly who George was in the second quarter where she put up 11 of her own points. Add in a pair of threes from Sienna Gonzalez and Sophia Nemec, two members of the Red Legion, and the Lady Cougars were up, 25-20, going into halftime.

The Lady Cougars would not be outscored another quarter in the game. The Grim Reaper and Nemec hit a couple threes in the third where the Lady Lions’s Vale Garza, Mia Davidson, and Kevyn Gas’s had nine combined points.

Ozona picked it up in the fourth but wouldn’t be able to overcome the Lady Cougars as Full Metal Hughes was perfect from the free throw line, going 6-6. George, Jordyn Walker, Breyles Silva, and Nemec all got in on adding points to the board for a total of 15.

For the Lady Lions, Vale Garza added another five, Davidson and Alondra Garza put up two apiece, Gas’s hit a free throw, and Faith Quiroz put up four.

When the dust settled, the Lady Cougars were triumphant, 52-43, and now have swept the Ozona Lady Lions to remain alone at the top of their district and stay undefeated in district. The Christoval girls have three more wins to secure before running the table in district. First, they’ll travel to the other side of Tom Green County and take on the Water Valley Lady Wildcats, then they’ll make their way to Sutton County to take on the Sonora Lady Broncos, and finally they’ll wrap up the regular season at home against the Sterling City Eagles.

The Lady Lions will defend the Den against the Sterling City Lady Eagles first, then go on the road to finish the season against the Reagan County Lady Owls and the Forsan Lady Buffalos.
