RICHARDSON, TX — The National Champion Angelo State Rams Baseball team was picked to finish first in the Lone Star Conference on Tuesday, January 23. The LSC released the first preseason coaches poll for 2024, and the Rams are at the top.
“Defending NCAA Division II National Champion Angelo State is the favorite to win its third consecutive Lone Star Conference baseball title,” the LSC said.
The Rams received 503 total points in the coaches' poll with 38 of 39 first-place votes. Angelo State finished with a 56-9 overall record and 40-8 in LSC play. The Rams won the program’s first national title in 2023.
ASU’s Jacob Guerrero and Braxton Pearson also claimed preseason Player of the Year honors. Guerrero, the Rams’ star outfielder, finished 2023 with a .420 batting average and had an LSC-leading 97 hits, seven home runs, five triples, and 25 doubles. He also added 57 RBIs, 79 runs, and 22 stolen bases.
Pearson is a right-handed pitcher for the Rams. Last season, the senior from Georgetown went 8-2 on starts with one save and an impressive 2.64 ERA. He allowed 11 walks and added 48 strikeouts in 58 innings of work. Pearson finished his season with two complete games and only allowed opposing hitters a .215 batting average against him.
Angelo State begins its 2024 campaign with a road trip on Friday, February 2, against Eastern New Mexico before returning home to host Cameron on Friday, February 9.
