CHRISTOVAL— The Christoval Lady Cougars beat the Sonora Lady Broncos and are undefeated in district play as they near the halfway mark.
The Lady Cougars, led by Halle Hughes, beat the Lady Broncos 60-23 at home last night. Under first year Head Basketball Coach Brad Blalock, Christoval is 19-7 overall, 6-0 in district, and are state ranked after having the entire team return from last season. The Lady Broncos suffered a defeat at the Lady Cougar’s hands, pushing them to 1-5 in district and 9-15 overall.
Hughes got things started right after the tip when she sank a three-point shot from the corner and she never looked back. Of the 12 points Christoval scored in the first quarter, Hughes had seven points. Madyson George and Mady Wipff scored the other five. The Lady Broncos’ Mariana De La Fuente made a free throw and Jayla Williams made a two-point shot for Sonora’s only points of the quarter.
In the second, Ravyn Aguero and De La Fuente both made two free throws while Christoval’s Hughes knocked down another three, made a two-pointer, and sank two free throws. Braylee Silva hit two shots for four points and George, Workman, and Gonzalez each had two points for a total of 17. Going in at the half, Christoval was leading 29-7.
In the second half, Hughes added seven points while George had nine. Aaliyah Bogs came alive and hit four of five free throws and hit a two-point shot. Jae Thomason had seven in the third quarter alone and Workman had two points. In total for the second half, the Lady Cougars put up 31 points.
The Lady Broncos came out of halftime strong with 12 points. Williams had four points, Jezabel Pasillas hit four of four free throws, De La Fuente and Sabrinah Castro each had two points to total out at 12 for the third. In the fourth, Pasillas had three points and De La Fuente made one free throw.
The Lady Cougars ended up beating the Lady Broncos, 60-23.

On Friday, January 12, 2024, the Lady Cougars take on the Sterling City Lady Eagles in Sterling City while the Lady Broncos take on the Eldorado Lady Eagles at Sonora.
