SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 11 Angelo State Rams picked up two Lone Star Conference wins over the weekend. ASU downed Western New Mexico 77-64 last Thursday before knocking off Eastern New Mexico after a close contest, 88-85, on Saturday.
The Rams moved to 7-0 in conference play on the season and 12-1 overall. Angelo State extended its win streak to 11 games with Saturday's victory.
The Rams ' ability to share the load is a significant factor in these two wins. No one has emerged as the "go-to guy" in every game, as it seems like every player on this roster can show up and score points at any given moment. Head Coach Vinay Patel discussed this aspect of his team and more at his weekly press conference on Monday morning.
Check out the press conference below:
Patel mentioned the "Bigs" for the Rams playing vital roles for Angelo State in this latest string of victories.
"I think both of them are highly talented dudes," Patel said. "Our guys have gotten comfortable getting the ball inside, and Trey (Farrer) has delivered time and time again."
The Rams' 6'9" Forward put up a double-double on Thursday with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He followed up that performance on Saturday with a team-high 21 points.
"For me, the bright spot has been DJ Basey, Patel continued. "We ask him to do a lot of things defensively for us. He's a really good shot blocker and an excellent rebounder. His length causes problems in the post when other teams try to throw it inside. If we can get a ball screen and coverage, our guys throw it up and let him go and get it. Not many people can jump with (Basey)."
Basey finished with a career-high 17 points on Saturday against Eastern New Mexico.
The Rams will need their big men this weekend when Angelo State hits the road to play No. 4 West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian this Thursday and Saturday. Like the Rams, West Texas A&M is also undefeated in conference play, and this rivalry should add an excellent new chapter on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Canyon, TX.
