SAN ANGELO— The Angelo State Rambelles took over in the fourth quarter after a back-and-forth game against the Western New Mexico Mustangs, 81-68.
The Rambelles got a big game from three starters, Maddie Stephens, Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, and local girl Sawyer Lloyd, who scored double digit points for Angelo State against a feisty Western New Mexico team that had their sharp shooting hitting consistently. New Mexico’s Sydney Wright and Delaney Cook hit six three-point shots combined with Wright sinking five, scoring 23 points overall.
After the first quarter, the Rambelles enjoyed a 26-10 lead that quickly dissolved in the second with a big Western New Mexico second quarter where they put up 21 points. After the first half, the game was tied, 36-36. The Mustangs actually took the lead but with a foul with 1.8 seconds left that put ASU’s Lloyd on the free throw line, she tied the game.
Midway through the third quarter, the Rambelles started building a lead again with a 22 point quarter but Western New Mexico was only down four points going into the fourth with the score, 59-55.
With about five minutes left in the game, ASU has built up a 10-point lead, thanks to a Stephens two point shot but the Mustangs tried to keep it close as with 4:20 left, the Mustangs were only down six. The Rambelles would not give up the lead and finished the game victorious 81-68.
