FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys can lock up the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs with a win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, January 7. Not only that, but the Cowboys can also correct their current road game skid with a win.
Dallas has been historically bad on the road this season, so a win in Washington, D.C., would go a long way in building some confidence for the playoffs. However, another road loss would allow the Philadelphia Eagles to steal back the division title with a victory over the New York Giants.
The Commanders currently sport a 4-12 overall record, with multiple issues on offense and defense that hindered Washington all season. The Commanders could lock up the no. 2 pick in next year's draft with a loss, but it is not likely that Washington will want to end their 2023-24 campaign with a loss to a rival. The Commanders surrender an abysmal average of 30 points per game this season, so Dallas should have more opportunities for points in this matchup.
The Cowboys' defense faces Sam Howell on Sunday. On Wednesday, the Commanders' head coach, Ron Rivera, announced that Howell would lead Washington in the season finale against Dallas. Howell likes to sling the ball all over the field and can put up impressive numbers, but it is turnover-prone. He has over 3,700 passing yards and 20 touchdowns on the season but also has 19 interceptions.
Dak Prescott continues to play at an elite level this season, and that shouldn't change on Sunday. The quarterback has 32 touchdowns this season with only eight interceptions. Look for CeeDee Lamb to have another big game against a Washington secondary that allows 272.5 yards a game.
Dallas' taking the division crown this year would also continue a trend. It would be the 19th consecutive year that the NFC East did not have a team win consecutive division titles.
The Cowboys travel to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, January 7, to play the Commanders. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m.
