Two Little Southwest Conference Athletes Sign With Division I Programs

MIDLAND, TX — Two athletes from the Little Southwest Conference signed to play at the highest level of college football earlier this week for Early National Signing Day. Midland Legacy’s Marcos Davila and Odessa High’s Ivan Carreon will play for the Purdue Boilermakers and Oklahoma Sooners, respectively, next season.

Former quarterback for the Midland Legacy Rebels, Marcos Davila, signed to play at the next level for the Purdue Boilermakers on Early National Signing Day on Wednesday, December 21. Davila was a constant form of competition for the Central Bobcats over the last three football seasons, and his talent paid off as he will compete in the BIG10 next season.

The 4-star prospect was a three-year starter for the Rebels and never missed a game while under center at LHS. In his senior season, Davila led the Rebels to the third round of the playoffs, where the Rebels fell in a close matchup to the Allen Eagles. Davila owns several school records at this point, including all-time passing yards and passing touchdowns. The young quarterback accumulated more than 9,000 passing yards in his career and accounted for more than 100 touchdowns.

Originally committed to TCU prior to the 2023 season, Davila switched his commitment to the Boilermakers after an offensive coordinator change at Texas Christian. Former Texas Tech quarterback and current offensive coordinator for Purdue, Graham Harrell, convinced Davila to play in the air-raid system that Harrell took with him from Texas Tech to Purdue.

Purdue finished the 2023 season with a 4-8 overall record and missed a bowl-game berth. Things will not get any easier for the Boilermakers in 2024 as the BIG10 will expand to 18 teams next season with the addition of Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA. Hopefully, after some time under Harrell, Davila can contribute to the Boilermakers to turn their fortunes around in the future.

Four-star prospect and former Odessa High Broncho’s receiver Ivan Carreon signed his letter of intent to play for the Oklahoma Sooners for Early National Signing Day recently. The 3-year starter for the Bronchos was a force to be reckoned with on the field and was absolutely instrumental for Odessa High’s explosiveness on offense the past few seasons.

Standing 6’6” and weighing just under 200 pounds, the big-bodied receiver will be hard to handle once the Sooners’ strength and conditioning program grabs ahold of the young man. Carreon plays basketball and runs track in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. He has big-play ability and can stretch the field with his speed.

A dynamic player in the passing and run game, Carreon accumulated over 3,000 yards and 45 touchdowns in his time at Odessa High. He initially committed to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in December 2022 before flipping his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners in 2023.

The Oklahoma Sooners finished with a 10-2 overall record in the regular season this year and 3rd place in the Sooners’ final year in the Big 12. Oklahoma moves to the SEC in 2024 but still has one last game to play this season. The No. 12 Sooners take on No. 14 Arizona in the Alamo Bowl on Thursday, December 28.

The Central Bobcats finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record but have several promising athletes moving up the ranks. Hopefully, San Angelo will soon have more players representing the Concho Valley in the Division I Football ranks in the near future. The ‘Cats’ football program is known for churning out talented quarterbacks such as Maverick McIvor (Abilene Christian and Texas Tech) and Tyler Hill (Angelo State), so Bobcats’ fans should look forward to another player signing to play at the next level within the next few seasons.
