LUBBOCK, TX — The Texas Tech and Texas A&M basketball programs recently announced a renewal of their old rivalries. The Red Raiders and Aggies will play a home-and-home series against each other over the next two basketball seasons. The first matchup is scheduled for 2024 in Lubbock and 2025 in College Station. The rivalry has remained stagnant ever since the Aggies left for the SEC back in 2012.
Red Raiders first-year head coach Grant McCasland gave his thoughts on the future matchups after the announcement.
"I think this is a big part of what makes college basketball so great. To have a series between historic rivals is important to continue,” McCasland said. “We are thrilled about the opportunity to compete against the Aggies and know that this will benefit our team and schedule. I know the environment at United Supermarkets Arena will be elite. Our fans will love to be a part of this game next year."
The Red Raiders and Aggies have played each other 125 times over the years. Texas Tech currently owns a tight race with a 64-61 advantage all-time. The first matchup came back in December of 1941, when the Red Raiders won 48-36. Both schools were conference rivals in the Southwest Conference from 1957-1996 and then Big 12 opponents from 1996-2012. While Tech might own the series at the moment, the Aggies beat the Red Raiders in the previous six meetings, with the last A&M victory coming in 2012.
The announcement came amidst the Red Raiders’ 2023 campaign with a young squad and a new head coach. While Texas Tech has struggled at times this season, McCasland continues to build a foundation for the program that will hopefully carry the Red Raiders through the final roadblock in the future. Texas Tech earned a spot in the 2019 National Championship Game but fell in overtime to Virginia 85-77.
