Local Female Powerlifter Makes Run at State Title

SAN ANGELO, TX — Jaylen Dehoyos, 17, a student-athlete at Central High School, has turned her passion for lifting weights into a promising career in powerlifting, a sport she has excelled in since her freshman year.

Introduced to weight training at Fitness United, owned by Matt Cutrer, Dehoyos found her passion for lifting heavy under the guidance of her coach. Her dedication led her to focus on the "big three" compound lifts — the deadlift, squat, and bench press — under a coach who emphasized proper technique and form for powerlifting competitions.

As she honed her skills, Dehoyos gained confidence and discovered her innate talent for powerlifting. Despite initial trepidation, lifting heavy weights became one of her favorite pursuits. Dehoyos also trained at another local gym called The Bar, which specializes in powerlifting and provided her with even larger opportunities to increase her skill level. This enthusiasm led her to join Central High's powerlifting team, where she made her mark in her first competition, surpassing her expectations by achieving a remarkable 215-pound deadlift instead of her planned 200 pounds.

Her coaches recognized her potential, acknowledging that Dehoyos possessed a natural gift for powerlifting. With determination and drive, Dehoyos consistently aims for excellence in her training, setting her sights on this year's State title competition in Frisco, Texas, scheduled for early March 2024. Having placed third in the previous season, she is determined to claim the first-place title this year.

As a high school senior, Dehoyos is not only focused on her athletic pursuits but also on planning her collegiate future. Despite Texas colleges not offering scholarships for powerlifting athletes, she is exploring out-of-state options that provide scholarships for the sport. Considering schools like the University of Texas, UTSA, and Midland College in Nebraska, Dehoyos is carefully weighing her choices, and seeking guidance from her family, friends, and coaches before making her decision.

San Angelo Live will closely follow Dehoyos's journey as she competes across Texas and will be present for her college signing day.
