DAYTONA BEACH, FL — The No. 20 Angelo State Rams Basketball team finished 2-0 at the Daytona Beach Shootout on Monday, December 18, with a 101-98 win over No. 6 West Liberty. The Rams held on to a first-half lead with an impressive 64 percent shooting percentage from 3-point range.
The Rams secured Monday’s win over last season’s national title runner-up, West Liberty, with a combination of electric shooting in the first half and solid defense down the stretch in the second. Angelo State led by 13 points heading into the break after the Rams couldn’t miss in the first frame. The Hilltoppers battled back in the 2nd half as they slowly whittled away Angelo State’s advantage.
Clutch free throws from Willie Guy and Carvell Teasett down the stretch kept the Rams up, and a final basket by Trey Farrer sealed the deal with little time remaining in the game. Keyshawn Embery-Simpson led Angelo State in scoring with 29 points. Simpson finished the game 7-10 from beyond the arc. He also added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Kevon Godwin had 21 points for the Rams. Guy and Teasett followed up Godwin’s total with 13 points each, while Farrer finished with 12 points.
The Rams finished with 16-25 shooting from 3-point land, and the impressive 64% shooting percentage was the key factor in the win.
