DeSoto Eagles Too Strong for Humble Summer Creek

ARLINGTON, TX — The final game on Day 3 in the 2023 Texas High School Football State Championships on Saturday, December 16, featured two powerhouses hoping to bring home one final victory for their schools. The DeSoto Eagles and Summer Creek Bulldogs squared off for a chance at a state championship.

Summer Creek won the coin toss and elected to kick the ball to Desoto and receive the ball for the second half. Right out of the gates, quarterback Darius Bailey completes a 54-yard touchdown pass to #27 Marvin Duffey. Desoto then elected to go for the two-point conversion. After the successful try, the Eagles led 8-0. 

On the very next drive, Summer Creek threw an interception, which was picked off by Keylan Abrams for a 2-yard gain. This would set up Desoto for another 21-yard touchdown by #1 Deondrae Riden Jr. The PAT would bring the score to 15-0 Desoto with more than half of the 1st quarter left to play. 

 

Desoto would put up a strong defense, forcing Summer Creek to go 3-and-out. Then Desoto would strike again with a 30-yard pass reception from Bailey to Daylon Singleton for another touchdown, increasing their lead yet again to 22-0. Desoto is dominating Summer Creek with 156 total yards. 

Summer Creek would continue to lose battle after battle to a strong Desoto defense, going 3-and-out again. Desoto would continue to abuse Summer Creek's offense with another touchdown pass for 55 yards from Bailey to Singleton yet again. Desoto now leads 29-0 with less than 2 minutes to play in the 1st quarter. 

Finally, Summer Creek gets a break by recovering a backward lateral pass that was a fumble on the 6 yard-line. The very next play from the 6-yard-line number #25 Lloyd Avant scores a rushing touchdown to put Summer Creek on the board. The PAT would be good bringing the score to 29-7 and putting Summer Creek back in the game with some momentum. 

Immediately following the Summer Creek touchdown, Desoto wastes no time and scores yet again with a 53-yard pass from Bailey to Singleton for the third time. The 1st quarter would come to an end with a huge Desoto lead 36-7. This makes Bailey 7 of 8 for 176 yards and 3 TDs and gives Singleton 4 receptions for 139 yards and 3 TDs. Desoto would end the 1st quarter with a total of 245 yards offensively, compared to a meager 8 total yards for Summer Creek. 

2nd Quarter

After a 3 and out, Desoto starts their next drive at the 29-yard line. Desoto would cap a 71-yard drive with a 33-yard field goal by their kicker Angel Diaz. Desoto now leads 39-7 over Summer Creek with 7:30 to play in the first half. 

Desoto would score again with another impressive drive, capped off by a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Bailey to end the 1st half, increasing their lead to 46-7. 

3rd Quarter

DeSoto's defense continued to dominate early in the 3rd quarter. After the Eagles forced a 3-and-out, Aundre Wisner blocked a punt by Summer Creek. DeSoto took over at Summer Creek's 6-yard line. Three plays later, Jaden Trawick punched the ball into the end zone from eight yards out to give DeSoto a 53-7 advantage.

The Eagles would turn the Bulldogs over again later in the 3rd. Summer Creek's Lloyd Avant took a handoff to the left side for a four-yard loss before he fumbled to the football. DeSoto's Jaylin Jones jumped on the loose ball to give DeSoto the ball at the Bulldogs' 30-yard line. Another deep ball from Darius Bailey to Ethan Feaster for 26 yards put the Eagles up 60-7 with 3:49 left in the 3rd quarter.

4th Quarter

DeSoto's defense continued to have a field day as they blocked a second punt from the Bulldogs early in the 4th quarter. Aundre Wisner again blew through the line to block the punt. Sael Reyes scooped up the ball and ran to the 27-yard line. He then lateraled to Brandon Booker, who trotted into the end zone for another touchdown. The Eagles led 67-7 with 9:50 left in the contest.

Summer Creek's offense put up another touchdown, with time winding down in the 4th quarter. Blake Thomas completed several passes to move the Bulldogs in range of the goal line. Lloyd Avant scored from 1 yard out to make the score 67-14 with 4:46 remaining in the 4th quarter.

DeSoto scored one more touchdown before the end of the game as they attempted to bleed the clock. The Eagles claimed the 6A Division II State Championship in dominant fashion, 74-14.
