Anna Smothers Chapel Hill to Claim 4A Div I Championship

ARLINGTON, TX — Day Three of the 2023 Texas High School Football State Championships kicked off on Friday, December 15, with the 4A Division I matchup between the Anna Coyotes (14-1) and the Chapel Hill Bulldogs (13-2). Anna came out guns blazing on offense and scored 26 points in the first half. While Chapel Hill initially played well on defense, offensive miscues gave Anna great field position throughout the 2nd quarter. Neither team scored in the 2nd half, and Anna went on to win a state championship, 26-0.

Watch the game highlights below:

Anna received the opening kickoff and began the Coyotes' first drive at their 35-yard line. Anna took a methodical approach on offense and gained multiple first downs on the way to an opening touchdown. In fact, the longest play on the possession was a 17-yard run from RB Edward Chumley. QB Ziondre Williams completed multiple passes as the Coyotes approached the goal line, and Chumley capped off the drive with a 6-yard rushing touchdown.

Chapel Hill did nothing with its first possession, and after a punt, Anna added a field goal to take a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter.

Chapel Hill made it to midfield early in the 2nd quarter, but Anna's defense would not budge after that. Another punt gave Jabari Finnie a chance to shine for Anna. The young man took the punt and returned 74 yards to Chapel Hill's 8-yard line. Chapel Hill forced a 4th and goal at the 2-yard line, but Chumley powered his way into the end zone for another touchdown.

The Bulldogs' offense offense then suffered setback after setback for the remainder of the first half. Sacks, penalties, and bad snaps caused Chapel Hill to not only lose yards but also surrender field position and a safety. Ziondre Williams hit Chumley for a touchdown pass to extend the Coyotes' lead to 24 points before a bad snap by Chapel Hill through the back of the end zone gave Anna a 26-0 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs played well on defense in the 2nd half. Chapel Hill shut down Anna and did not allow a single point for the rest of the contest. However, Anna played just as well on defense. Every time Chapel Hill pulled its offense together and marched down the field, Anna would come up with a 4th down stop or a turnover.

Anna pitched a shutout to claim the 4A Division I State Championship 26-0.

Anna's Edward Chumley earned 4A Division I MVP Honors for his performance. The running back finished the game with 16 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He added three catches for 31 yards and another touchdown. He scored every touchdown for the Coyotes in the title game.
