FORT WORTH— A former Dallas Cowboys legend has led a high school team to a state championship.
Something he was never able to do as a Cowboys, former legendary Dallas tight end Jason Witten has won a championship. Witten led the Liberty Christian Warriors to a perfect record and capped the season off with a state championship.
The TAPPS school Liberty Christian beat Austin Regents on Friday, 52-10. This is the first state championship the school has won since 2007 and Witten won it with his two children, C.J. and Cooper, on the team.
Witten is 26-10 since taking over the program three years ago.
Of course, Witten was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and was Cowboy legend Tony Romo’s go-to safety blanket for his entire career. At the end, Witten went back and forth with retirement and ended up finishing his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Now he is teaching his kids’ generation how it’s done.
Public schools are headed into the semi-finals this week. When Wall fell to Canadian, Brownwood fell to Decatur, and in 6-man Richland Springs lost tonight, there are no more schools in our region vying for a state championship in 2023.
