ODESSA, TX — The unofficial results for Tuesday’s, November 7, election are in, and the people in Ector County have spoken. According to the Ector County Elections Office, of the three bond propositions from the Ector County School Board that were on the ballot for the 2023 election, only Proposition A passed. Voters failed to pass Propositions B and C.
Proposition A involved purchasing land and constructing new buildings for a Career and Technical Education Center and a new middle school in West Ector County. According to the article, this Proposition passed with 5,557 votes in favor and 4,222 votes against.
The unfortunate news, however, is Proposition B included much-needed repairs and additions to the historic Ratliff Stadium, including the installation of lights in the parking lot. This Prop failed with 5,072 votes against and 4,670 for.
Furthermore, Proposition C was also struck down with 5,269 votes against, which included updates to athletic facilities for Odessa and Permian High Schools. Odessa Permian would have received new turf for their existing indoor practice facility. Additionally, Odessa High would have received an indoor practice facility of their own.
With important funding decisions on the line, only 11% of registered voters in Ector County showed up to vote.
Meanwhile, in Midland, the Midland Independent School District recently passed Midland ISD’s $1,415,400,000 bond proposal on Tuesday night. This bond will build two new high schools in Midland for Midland High and Midland Legacy. San Angelo ISD is another school district that recently upgraded its stadium. San Angelo stadium replaced its stadium lighting back in 2021 and the turf in 2020. While the press box needs a complete makeover, at least the school district wants the players to have the best possible experience on Friday nights.
Ector County may try to fund additional improvements to Odessa High School and Ratliff Stadium in the future. However, with only an 11% turnout, Ector County residents’ votes matter more than ever.
