Texas Rangers Win First World Series in Franchise History

PHOENIX, AZ — The Texas Rangers are the 2023 World Series Champions. After a low-scoring affair permeated much of Game 5 at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix, the Rangers exploded with four runs in the 9th inning to secure the first World Championship in franchise history.

Neither team gave any ground for 75 percent of the ballgame. Texas finally broke the stalemate in the top of the 7th inning. Corey Seager led off the inning with a single to left field. Evan Carter followed up Seager’s hit with a double to move Seager to third base. Finally, Mitch Garver singled to center field to score Seager from third. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead headed to the bottom of the 7th inning.

Arizona tried its best to even the score after that, but the offense fell flat on its face on Wednesday night. A normally potent offense only managed five hits on the evening and left several runners on base throughout the contest. Still, headed to the 9th inning, it was still just a one-run game.

Texas left no doubt in the 9th. Ex-Red Raider Josh Jung started the Rangers off with a single to center field. Nathaniel Lowe followed that up with a single to left. The floodgates opened at that point as Jonah Heim singled to center to score Jung, but in the process, the Diamondbacks center fielder Alek Thomas whiffed on the ground ball. The baseball rolled to the wall, and Lowe scored on the error. Marcus Semien then stepped up to the plate to slam down an exclamation point on an excellent World Series. He hit a 406-foot shot to left center to give the Rangers a 5-0 lead headed to the bottom of the 9th.

Josh Sborz took the mound for the Rangers in the 9th inning and completely shut down Arizona for the final three outs. He threw a perfect breaking ball for a called strike three on the final out and the Texas Rangers won their first World Series with a 5-0 Game 5 victory. The Rangers won the overall series 4-1. Corey Seager won World Series MVP.
