SAN ANTONIO, TX — The first week of the 2023-24 NBA Season tips off on Tuesday, October 24, with a full slate of games beginning at 6 p.m. and will continue throughout the week. The Lone Star State’s three professional teams are ready to start another season. There is considerably more hype surrounding one of these teams this year with the acquisition of an unproven but would-be superstar in the San Antonio Spurs.
The San Antonio Spurs won the draft lottery in the 2023 NBA Draft this year and, with the first selection, picked Victor Wembanyama, a young superstar on the French pro basketball circuit. Wembanyama stands a towering 7’2” tall with a wingspan of nearly eight feet. While these proportions would make any NBA franchise salivate, at 209 lbs, many wondered if his slight build would be enough to translate to the tough environment in the NBA.
After a rough first outing in the NBA Summer League earlier this year, Wembanyama had a bounce-back performance before the Spurs shut him down. He resumed play for the NBA preseason and immediately showed improvement. The first overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.8 blocks per game in four preseason outings. His most impressive game of the preseason game against the Golden State Warriors. Wembanyama posted 19 points (8-19 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 1-1 FT), four rebounds, an assist, a steal, and five blocks across 21 minutes in the 122-117 preseason win over the Warriors.
The Spurs and their fans have high hopes for Wembanyama to return San Antonio to one of the NBA’s powerhouse teams in the coming seasons. He will get his first shot in his NBA debut at home at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, October 25, at 8:30 p.m.
The final team in Texas tips off its regular season on the road. The Houston Rockets travel to Orlando on Wednesday, October 25, to play the Magic at 6 p.m.
