SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 20 Angelo State Rams took some needed time off last week for their bye week before the matchup against Texas A&M Kingsville this Saturday, October 14. Head Coach Jeff Girsch held his weekly press conference on Monday to discuss how the Rams used their off-week and what he expects from Texas A&M Kingsville this weekend.
Check out Girsch’s press conference below:
“We’ve continued to build depth,” Girsh said about the Rams off week. “We got a lot of reps in with our younger players. That was the biggest part: continuing to build depth, get our guys healthy, but maintain good competition in practice.”
A bye week at this point in the season is a rarity for the Rams. Angelo State had some injuries, Kason Phillips, for example, and last week proved beneficial. Girsch said that Angelo State used most of last week to work with its younger guys and will focus on Texas A&M Kingsville this week.
“Kingsville’s a very good football team,” Girsch said. “They are coached well. They have a lot of talent. We are excited to go out and play. It’s a great matchup for us, and our kids are ready to get back out on the field and play.”
Texas A&M Kingsville currently sports a 4-1 overall record and a 2-1 record in Lone Star Conference play. Because the Rams dropped a conference game to Central Washington early, a win this week would go a long way in establishing Angelo State’s dominance over the conference.
However, a win this week is easier said than done. As Girsch said, the Javelinas have several good players and are well-coached. Texas A&M Kingsville’s offense does not look that impressive on paper, only averaging 261 yards a game (127 rush, 134 pass), but the offense does what it needs to do to win. The impressive part of Texas A&M Kingsville is its defense. The Javelinas have at least one takeaway in every matchup this season and 12 on the year. If the Rams want to win this matchup on the road, ball security is key.
Angelo State travels to Kingsville on Saturday, October 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
