SANTA CLARA, CA — The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday, October 6, that they acquired former Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Randy Gregory via trade from the Denver Broncos ahead of the matchup with the Cowboys on Sunday.
Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the 49ers and Broncos agreed to send Gregory and a 2024 7th-round pick to San Francisco for a 2024 6th-round pick.
The Broncos are stuck with the lion's share of Groegory’s salary this season, as they will pay him roughly $10 million for the rest of the season. San Francisco said that they will pay Gregory the veteran minimum this season. ESPN reported that Gregory, 30, has three seasons left on a 5-year, $70 million deal with the Broncos, but none of that money is guaranteed beyond 2023.
Gregory left the Cowboys after the 2021-22 season after the Cowboys backed out of a 5-year, $70 million contract extension. The Cowboys pulled out because of a lack of language in the contract that would account for possible fines and suspensions that Gregory might have in 2022-23. He later signed with the Denver Broncos later in the offseason for the same price tag.
This deal came to pass after the defensive end, and his team asked for a release earlier in the week. Gregory was pulled from the game against the Bears in Week 4. He finished his tenure with the Broncos this season with nine tackles and one sack. If the former Cowboy can still play at a high level, this addition will benefit a San Francisco pass rush that has only accumulated four sacks in four games this season.
As a Dallas Cowboy, Gregory was productive. He finished his tenure in Dallas with 19.5 quarterback sacks and 81 pressures.
