FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys (3-1) finally get their chance at revenge on Sunday, October 8, when the ‘Boys travel to Santa Clara to face the San Francisco 49ers (4-0). San Francisco kicked the Cowboys out of the Divisional Round of the playoffs 19-12 back in January. Both teams currently represent the elite in the early parts of the 2023-24 NFL Season, and this matchup could have possible playoff implications down the road.
DALLAS VS SAN FRANCISCO
- Date: Sunday, October 8
- Time: 7:20 p.m.
- Location: Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA
- Watch: NBC on Sunday Night Football or on a paid subscription on the NFL App.
These two rivals meet in another colossal matchup that could decide future playoff seedings. San Francisco eliminated the Cowboys from playoff contention in back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023 in the Wild Card and then the Divisional Round. Cowboys’ fans everywhere expect great things from Dallas this season, and a win over San Fran on Sunday night would go a long way in reassuring Cowboys’ Nation that this might indeed be the ‘Boys year.
Series Record: 19-19-1
The overall series between the two historic rivals is deadlocked at an even .500. This matchup will give the winner control of the overall series. While Dallas has dominated the series over the last ten or so seasons, San Francisco has won two straight playoff games against the Cowboys.
The Cowboys enter Sunday’s matchup with the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL. Dallas scored one fumble recovery and returned two interceptions for touchdowns so far this season. Pittsburgh and Seattle are tied for second with two touchdowns each.
San Francisco enters Week 5 as one of two teams with a perfect record (the other being the Philadelphia Eagles). 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy assumed full starter responsibilities this season and continues to improve as a quarterback every week. Head Coach Kyle Shannahan’s offense is perfect for the former last pick in the draft and has helped the young quarterback grow. As his confidence grows, so does the danger level of the 49ers offense. The Dallas defense might have their hands full on the road trying to contain guys like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and Brandon Aiyuk. However, the Cowboys also sport the best player in all of football in Micah Parsons. Look for the All-Pro to have another breakout game against the young quarterback.
Parsons spoke to the media this week about the matchup this weekend. Watch the video below:
On the offensive side of the ball, the Cowboys have not had to do much. Other than the Arizona game, Dallas won in a blowout. This is the week to prove that Dak Prescott, Tony Pollard, CeeDee Lamb, and company can be elite with Head Coach Mike McCarthy calling plays. The 49ers’ defense is still one of the best in the league, so Prescott will have to take great care of the football. In the playoff game last season, Prescott had two interceptions against San Francisco.
