MATCHUP PREVIEW: District Begins as TLCA San Angelo Takes on Brady

BRADY— The Brady Bulldogs kick off their district schedule with a tough matchup against Layne Honea and the TLCA San Angelo Eagles.

In Week Five, the Bulldogs lost a close one to the Christoval Cougars, 20-16. One thing noticed about Brady is how many players were on the sideline with injuries. Running back Zeke Jones, linebacker Johnny Menefield, and wide receiver Ashton Ramsey, three of the bigger playmakers for the Bulldogs, sat on the sidelines.

The TLCA San Angelo Eagles shut out the Stanton Buffaloes in Week Five, 41-0. Honea connected on 18 of his 29 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns. Luis Casillas and Isaiah Vaquera caught eight passes for 200 yards and three scores combined against Stanton.

The offense has been coming around behind sophomore quarterback Sean Jacoby, who is 32-85 for 472 yards, one touchdown and 10 interceptions. Brady has been moving the ball well on the ground behind Daryl Adair and Zeke Jones, Brady’s thunder and lightning. Adair leads the Bulldogs with 374 yards and two scores and Jones has 246 yards and two scores. Jacoby is third in carries and yards with 29 attempts for 104 yards and one touchdown.

Through the air, Jones leads in yardage with 176 and one touchdown and Ashton Ramsey is first in catches with 10 for 116 yards and one touchdown.

Adair leads the Bulldogs in tackles with 42 and is followed by Jones (34), Ramsey (32), Menefield (31), DeMarcus Reed (26), and Xavier Mendez (24). Menefield and Sophomore DeMarcus Reed have each gotten to the quarterback once and the team has six quarterback pressures. Reed has been a problem for opposing offenses and makes plays in their backfield as he has three tackles for loss from the defensive tackle position. Reed is tied with Jones and fellow sophomore Ashton Taylor in tackles for loss.

Juniors Ethan Medrano and Ramsey has snagged an interception this season and Menefield, Ramsey, and Reed each have one pass defended. Medrano has one forced fumble and Mendez and Adrian Solis both have one fumble recovery.

The TLCA San Angelo Eagles have the best record in San Angelo at 3-2. Layne Honea, the Eagles’ quarterback, has been on fire recently and his stats back that up. Honea has gone 88-146 for 1,410 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Honea also holds a 60% completion percentage at the halfway point. Senior Natavian Sykes leads in rushing attempts and yards, toting the rock 40 times for 238 yards and five touchdowns. Jeremiah Bullingor follows Sykes with 19 attempts for 194 yards and one score.

At wide receiver, Jaidden Villanueva is Honea’s go-to guy with 21 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Luis Casillas is second with 12 receptiosn for 208 yards and one score.
