Legendary Longhorns Quarterback Cut by the Arizona Cardinals

TEMPE, AZ — As NFL franchises approach the start of the 2023 season, cuts need to be made to trim down to the final 53-man roster. One of those cuts was ex-longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy. The Arizona Cardinals announced on Monday, August 28, that they have released the Texas veteran quarterback.

First reported by Adam Schefter via his X account, the Cardinals will now have to rely on Josh Dobbs or rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune (out of the University of Houston) to start the regular season. Starting quarterback Kyler Murray starts the season on the PUP list, so he will have to miss at least four games before he is eligible to return to the field.

McCoy, 36, signed with the Cardinals in 2021. He was the first-team quarterback all spring, training camp, and preseason while Arizona waited for Murray to return from ACL surgery. Cardinals Head Coach Jonathan Gannon had this to say about McCoy.

“I don't think it's anything he didn't show us," Gannon said. "I think it was just looking at OTAs and then training camp and the games and the full body of work. We just feel like this is the best way to go.”

McCoy is now available to sign with any NFL team that needs a backup quarterback. The longtime NFL player still has plenty left in the tank and can be a serviceable option to back up a young quarterback in this league. The Cleveland Browns drafted McCoy in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He has also been a member of the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, New York Giants, and Arizona Cardinals.

Colt McCoy attended Jim Ned High School and played for his father before joining the Texas Longhorns under Mack Brown. The Heisman Trophy finalist led the Longhorns to the National Title game against Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, and the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2010 before an injury suffered in the first quarter knocked him out of the game. Texas fell to Alabama 37-21.
