SAN ANGELO— The Lake View Chiefs started off the 2023 football season the right way and are looking to continue their dominance against the Sweetwater Mustangs this Friday.
Last Friday, the Chiefs brought the pain against the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes, beating them 49-8. The Chiefs had to be a little worried after the first quarter when Lake View only managed to put three points on the board to Lamesa’s eight.
Those worries were quickly calmed as the “Kids from the North Side” put up 46 unchallenged points in the next three-quarters of the game.
It all started with running back Ian Cortez catching a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Auston Perez. Receiver Wyatt Henry then caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Perez before he ran in a five-yard score. Cortez would end the second quarter with a short two-yard scoring run that would make the score 32-8.
In the third quarter, wide receiver Adrian Flores caught a huge 55-yard touchdown from Perez to make the score 39-8. Then, in the fourth quarter, Fabian Rodela snagged a 19-yard touchdown, and Elijah Stone kicked a 41-yard field goal to finish the game 49-8.
Perez was slinging the ball around for the Chiefs, going 14/21 for 218 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Cortez ran 14 times for 81 yards, and Sammy Ramirez had six runs for 22 yards.
Flores and Henry led the receivers with 63 and 61 yards, respectively, and one touchdown each. Cortez’s 37-yard touchdown catch was his only catch, and Braeden Packard and Rodela each had two catches for 26 and 22 yards. Angel Martinez caught one pass for nine yards, and Francisco Ramirez caught one pass for three yards.
Defensively, Noah Rios led the team in tackles with 10, and Flores, Braylon White, and Jimmy Garcia each had one interception against Lamesa.
In all, the Chiefs looked like a dominant team in their opening week and will look to do the same against Sweetwater this coming Friday in San Angelo Stadium.
The Mustangs are coming off a 42-20 win over the Idalou Wildcats. Sweetwater is extremely young this season, and freshman quarterback Caiden Ortiz went off, throwing 11/16 for 249 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Korda Moore carried the ball 10 times for 89 yards and one touchdown, and senior receiver Jaydn Forbes caught three passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Jace Adames and sophomore Talan Lujan caught three passes for 79 yards and two scores combined.
On defense, senior Kannon Weise and sophomore Braxton Bartee had 14 and 12 tackles, respectively, and junior Daniel Rodriguez had one interception while sophomore Cash Barnes had the other.
This is going to be a battle of experience versus youth. Lake View returned a few handfuls of talented players, while Sweetwater has young talent peppering the field. Lake View's Head Coach Hector Guevara held his weekly press conference on Tuesday, August 29.
