SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University Athletics held its first press conference of the year for fall sports on Monday, August 28. The No. 5 Angelo State Rams kick off their 2023 campaign against West Alabama at 6 p.m. in Livingston, Alabama, on Thursday, August 31. Angelo State comes off the best season in program history in 2022 (12-1 overall record and a Lone Star Conference Championship), and the Rams already have title aspirations again this year. Girsch said that the Rams reloaded this season and that Week 1 against West Alabama is the starting point for another great season. A National Championship is the Rams’ goal this season, and Girsch does not think the bar is too high for Angelo State.

“There’s no doubt. If you do things the right way and continue to recruit the way you are supposed to, then [a title] is what the ultimate goal is,” Girsch said. “If we win a National Championship, it’s because of the guys we are recruiting and how we are building the program. We continue to do things the right way and will continue to work towards the goal of winning a National Championship.”

One of the Rams’ biggest strengths from a season ago was the defense. Angelo State sported one of the best defenses in Division II College football last year, but after graduation and the transfer portal, there will be many new names and faces in 2023.

“It’s all about recruiting,” Girsch said of his defense. “It really is going out and getting the right kids in the right fit for the program. “We are going lose guys every year to graduation and the portal. [The transfer portal] is a new beast that’s just part of it. You either embrace it, or you complain about it and fall behind.”

The Rams travel to Livingston on Thursday, August 31, to play the West Alabama Tigers at 6 p.m. The Tigers sport an athletic front with a lot of speed at the skill positions. This game should prove to be an excellent test for the Rams early on in the season. Watch Jeff Girsch below:
