WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks kick off their 2023 Football season this weekend on Friday, August 25, against the Eastland Mavericks in Wall at 7 p.m. Head Coach Houston Guy took time out of practice to speak to San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick on what his expectations are for the Hawks in Week 1 and beyond this season.
“It’s been a good week for us, and we’ve got a lot done,” Guy said of his football team. “We’ve cleaned up some of our errors that we had [against Midland Christian] on Friday night. We put the ball on the ground a little more than we wanted to and had more penalties than we wanted to have. So, we are trying to clean those areas up.”
The Hawks scrimmaged a talented Mustang offense last Friday whose speed rivals anyone that that Wall will play in 3A football this year. Despite the challenge, the Hawks’ defense performed well. The defense will be Wall’s most effective strength this season, and Guy thinks that it will be a defense that allows less than ten points a game on average.
“They are going to be flying to the football [this weekend],” Guy said of his defense. “We are not really big up front defensively, but they are super fast. Everyone on our defense is a sub-five [second] 40. They are very fast and very aggressive. They will assignment football, but yet, they will do it and still get to the football in a hurry.

Eastland finished its season last year with a 1-9 overall record. Coach Guy says this isn’t the same team from a year ago, as the Mavericks returned almost everyone on both sides of the football. The No. 6 Wall Hawks are favored to win this matchup, but Wall cannot become complacent headed into the beginning of the season. Coach Guy and Defensive Coordinator Craig Slaughter have prepared the Hawks to the best of their ability, and fans can finally see what Wall can do this Friday.
