SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, PA — Texas still has a team alive in 2023’s Little League World Series tournament. After sweeping the South West region with a perfect 4-0 record, the team from Needville, Texas (Southwest Fort Bend County) continues to turn heads in Pennsylvania. The stomp through the tournament continued on Monday, August 21, when Texas (Southwest) defeated California (West) 3-1 for a trip to the semi-finals.
Up to this point in the tournament, the Needville boys have picked up wins against Pennsylvania (Mid-Atlantic) and North Dakota (Midwest). The high-pressure games seem not to faze these kids, as the wins keep coming. Texas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Easton Benge and Colten Gerogi hit RBI singles in the top of the 1st.
California rescinded with a home run in the bottom half of the inning, but Texas locked down after that and led the rest of the way. DJ Jablonski added a solo shot in the top of the 4th to increase Texas’ lead to 3-1, and the California kids never mounted a serious comeback.
Jablonski started on the mound for Texas. The young man pitched 5 ⅓ innings, allowed just four hits, one walk, and struck out four. Needville won the game 3-1. Texas will now face the Northwest Region Champion Washington on Wednesday, August 23, at 3 p.m. The game can be watched on ESPN. Texas is just one game away front he U.S. Championship game.
