SAN ANGELO, TX — The start of the 2023 Football season for the Lake View Chiefs is just around the corner, and Head Coach Hector Guevara met with the media on Tuesday to discuss expectations for Week 1 and beyond. The Chiefs travel to Lamesa on Friday, August 25, to play the Tornadoes.
Watch the press conference below:
“Whether we start on defense or on offense, we need to make sure we are sound in whatever we are doing,” Guevara said of his team’s chances at victory this Friday. “Hopefully, if we do that, [momentum] will build up throughout the ball game. We just need to stick together and to the game plan.”
Lake View defeated Lamesa here in San Angelo a season ago, 44-28, and Guevara wants to see a similar result this weekend. The Chiefs are a young team this season, but they return enough starters to have decent depth moving forward. Lake View’s new guys will have to soak in experience quickly if the Chiefs want to overcome last season’s overall record.
Lamesa’s offense keeps the ball on the ground, for the most part, as the Tornadoes run the veer. Lake View will have to play extremely disciplined on defense if they want to shut Lamesa down. Anything less than fundamental football against this type of offense will see the Tornadoes running up and down the field on the Chiefs all evening.
“Offensively or defensively, we have to be fundamentally sound,” Guevara said. “[Lamesa] runs the Veer, so we have to make sure we do our jobs. We cannot give up any big plays.”
Offensively, time of possession matters. Because the Tornadoes run the ball as much as they do, the clock will rarely start. Lake View needs to control the ball on offense. Guevara says that sustained drives will help the defense and keep Lamesa’s offense on the sidelines.
Lake View travels to Lamesa on Friday, August 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
