BRADY— The Brady Bulldogs played their last scrimmage Thursday night against the Llano Yellowjackets heading into the regular season.
The Bulldog defense looked good, eating up the run and defending the pass. Yes, in the two quarters they played, they gave up 23 points and only scored seven. But the defensive line was getting after it and swallowing up running lanes. They were also getting after the quarterback pretty well too.
It should not be a surprise as new head coach Jaron Roberts is a defensive guy who saw all kinds of offenses at Stamford. Junior linebacker Johnny Menefield had a pick in the beginning of the scrimmage and Mason Airheart had a couple big pass breakups. DeMarcus Reed was moving around as well.
The Bulldog offense on the other hand is still coming together. Running back Zeke Jones busted out a long touchdown run in the live half they played. The offensive line is still gelling as well. They were able to grind out some tough yardage between the tackles.
It will be important for the Bulldogs to stay confident as the Llano scrimmage was just the start of the gauntlet they have heading their way. Next week, the Bulldogs take on the Comanche Indians, who have a superstar running back in Sawyer Wilkinson. Then, they’ll take on the Mason Punchers and Coleman Bluecats in weeks two and three respectively.
One thing about the Bulldogs and Indians game, it is a Peanut Butter Bowl game. Coach Roberts said they will do some work on the humanitarian side of things this season and its starts Week One. The Peanut Butter Bowl donates jars of peanut butter to organizations who will distribute it to food insecure families and children. To donate, CLICK HERE.
Those three teams, along with Llano, made deep runs in the playoffs last season. The Bulldogs certainly have their work cut out for them.
