WASHINGTON— The hated rivals of the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Commanders, have named a starting quarterback.
The Washington Commanders have named second year quarterback Sam Howell as their starting quarterback.
Howell, who was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, had some playing time last year and looked good in the preseason. In his one start last year, he beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-6 and went 11-19 for 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Howell rushed for 35 yards and scored a rushing touchdown as well.
A quality signal caller has eluded Washington for quite some time. Since 2010, the Commanders have had 17 different starting quarterbacks. The most famous one, Baylor alum Robert Griffin III, looked like he might be the guy to take Washington to the next level for years to come but injuries cut his career short. Another quarterback taken the same year, Kirk Cousins, then started for three seasons before finding his way to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Commanders have a pretty talented roster and wide receiver Terry McLaurin is one of the best in the game. They have an incredibly good defensive line that has really nothing but first round picks on it. The thing is, Washington could be scary good if they find themselves a quarterback, something they hope Howell is.
